The morning was too beautiful a morning to pass up, so I loaded the dogs and the boys and we setout for a morning in the woods - the computer software and all of its bugs would have to wait for a few hours.
We put out on a new piece of property that I've got permission to hunt (about 700 acres) and within about 20 minutes my main strike dog Boudreau took off in a hurry towards the east. We were on foot, and had only 1 catch dog with us (my female AB Ruby). I heard the hound open up WAY off in the distance - he is silent until he is looking at a hog, so I knew that we had to move. I humpped it across the mesquite-riddled pasture, with my catch dog on the leash and my 2 boys running behind me. We covered about a 1/2 mile this way every now and then stopping to listen - the other dogs had joined the hound and had a pretty good bay going. I ran in just a bit closer and when I was about 100 yards away turned the catch dog loose. In no time at all she busted into the bay and we heard the sound of a big group of hogs grunting and snorting like they do when they are pissed off and bunched up. I turned around to tell my boys to GET INTO A TREE! They were up the nearest tree in no-time - really I didn't need to tell them to do it - because when they heard that god-awful sound they were the world's fastest tree-climbers! :-) I ran through the last bit of brush/thorns to get to the bay. My catch dog was on a pretty good sized sow (I'm guessing 220 or so) and the dogs had 5 other hogs in the bay! For a second I wasn't sure if I could rush in and help out because I wasn't sure what the other hogs would do.. but I ran in and grabbed the sow because I didn't want to leave Ruby in there alone. I knocked the sow over and stabbed her as quickly as I could. At this point the bay broke - and a 140 or 150 pound boar hog ran back towards the tree my boys were in. They got to watch as the hound and one of my curr dogs cut it off and worked it back towards me. The sow was almost dead now - and Ruby must have seen the boar hog coming back our way - she let go of the dead (or dying) sow and caught the boar! I jumped on and stabbed him too! Wow what a rush!
Here are some photos from the hunt, we had a great time, on a great morning, watching some great dogs do what they loved to do.
Hope y'all enjoyed my story..
