Been waiting to post this story until I got the picture thing figured out..
Got invited to hunt with some good friends by boat recently. The rains in Texas this year have been very heavy and most of the rivers are in flood stages. This has had an impact on the hog populations – the rains and flooding of the rivers and low areas have pushed a lot of the hogs up onto higher ground.

This hunt was to be by boat along the Trinity river. I was hunting with two of my good friends Keith and Brad (these 2 guys caught a 525 pound boar a few weeks ago). Keith had the boat and permission to hunt along a piece of the river. We loaded up at sunrise, clipping our dogs inside the flat-bottom boat. We took a few of each of our dogs I brought my good mountain cur find/bay dog "Tweety" and my AB catch dog Ruby. Tweety was the first real proven find dog that I ever purchased - I got her from Chris and Brandee Krpec.
I don’t think any of my dogs have ever been in a boat before so I had no idea how they’d react. Keith had his excellent Catahoula find dog “blue” and Brad had his best find dog “Smokey”.

We dumped out on a small island and started hunting. We saw a lot of sign, but didn’t get onto anything. We saw lots of deer and snakes, but no hogs. We made it back to the boat and decided to try the other bank of the river. We drove along the river looking for a good spot to put out again. Finally we found a safe spot and pulled the boat up onto shore. When we put out the second time you could tell from how excited the dogs were that they’d be on something soon. My dog “Tweety” and Brad’s dog Smokey went one direction and Keith’s dog Blue went another. Keith put another Cur dog out whose name I can’t recall – it might have been “rock”. I had Ruby on the lead. Shortly afterwards we heard Smokey start barking followed quickly by Tweety. “Rock” was up near us and started charging towards the bay. We ran through the woods, crossing 2 or 3 flooded water crossings along the way. We got pretty close and heard the pig fighting the dogs – then I released Ruby. When we ran in close to the bay I saw Ruby trying to find a way through a barbed wire fence, and the 3 dogs already had the pig caught (“Rock”) had beaten us to the bay and joined in with Smokey and Tweety. Ruby finally made it through the fence and caught too – but the hog was already under control.

The hog was about 120 pounds – little listed boar hog. Not as big as the last one Keith and Brad caught, but no slouch either, he fought like a much larger hog.
We tied him and dragged him back to the boat, then loaded up the dogs. The find/bay dogs were fine in the boat – but my catch dog fought me the entire boat ride to get back to the hog again, I was sure she was going to flip the boat!
