Got a call from the rancher whose place I hunt on. He said that he'd seen some hog sign recently and wondered if I could make it out to hunt his place sometime soon.
My son had a basketball game and a school dance, so I had to go it alone this time.
I got out with the dogs last night (Friday) we put out about 10 O'Clock. My son had a basketball game and a school dance, so it was just me and the dogs again, too late to call Steve or Bryan to come down.
I Hunted up an down this creek bottom for about 2 and an half hours, had a great walk in the woods on a nice cool night with alot of stars out - but no hogs, not even one bark. I decided to head back to the truck and call it a night.
I put my big AB catch dog Buster in the truck, and took off his catch vest, I caught my good little Mountain Curr Tweetie in the truck and took off all my gear, chaps, knife, GPS, fanny pack with first aid, etc. It was a nice night, but I was ready to get back on the road home, empty handed.
My main strike dog Boudreaux was still out, guess he wasn't ready to quit yet, but I was. I started to try to call him in, his buddy and helper curr dog Whiskey was with him apparently. I put a few more things away and started calling more insistently when way off in the distance I heard Boudreaux open up. The bay dog in the truck started to whine and try to get out of the truck - all of a sudden I heard the second dog join Boudreaux at the bay. I laughed and turned the bay dog loose, then got Buster out of the truck as well.
Buster and I ran across the field towards the bay, when I realised I didn't have my knife or anything tie the hog with - I had left in such a hurry all I had was the catch dog. I decided to go back to the truck and get at least my knife and my GPS incase I got turned around out there. Boy was Buster confused when I started pulling him the opposite direction from the bay!
Finally we made it back out across the field and across 3 barbed wire fences and into a very thick stand of mesquite trees and tall, thick brush. I turned Buster loose and tried to follow quickly behind him.
Soon I heard Buster crash into the bay, and the hog start grunting. I could tell from the sound that it was a good sized one. I continued to fight through the thorns and finally got to the bay. Buster and the other dogs had a 200+ pound sow caught down under some rotten tree limbs.
What a great way to end a nice night in the woods! I guess I know what Yogi meant when he said "it ain't over till its over"!
